About FOVMath

FOVMath is a reference for the arithmetic of amateur astrophotography and visual observing: how much sky a camera sees through a telescope, how finely each pixel samples the stars, whether a target fits the frame, and how long an untracked exposure can run. It is published by FOVMath, United States.

What is here

  • 9 calculators that run in your browser and show the formula behind every result.
  • Specifications for 96 cameras and 119 telescopes, read from the manufacturers' own pages and manuals, with a link to the page each value came from.
  • Catalogue sizes and positions for 65 deep-sky objects from SIMBAD, the SEDS Messier catalogue and catalogues hosted on VizieR, plus framing guides for well-known targets.
  • Guides that explain the formulas and the rules of thumb, citing the publications they come from.

What is not here

We do not publish test results, sample images or hands-on reviews, and we do not claim to have used the equipment listed. The site compares published specifications and computes what follows from them. It is not affiliated with any camera or telescope maker, and nobody pays for placement in the tables.

How the site is made

Pages are drafted with the help of AI writing tools and checked against the cited sources. Each page carries a review flag until the publisher has checked it. The full process, including how missing values are handled, is described on How we make this.

Corrections

Manufacturers revise specifications and catalogues disagree. If you find a value that does not match its source, email contact@fovmath.space with the page address and the source, and we will fix it.

Advertising

The site is funded by Google AdSense advertising. Ads are kept away from the calculators. See the privacy policy for what this means for your data.
